Signs Your HVAC System Is Low on Refrigerant

๐Ÿ‘ค A Plus Air ๐Ÿ“… July 1, 2026 ๐Ÿ•’ 6 min read

Low refrigerant can reduce cooling capacity, increase run time, and create operating conditions that may damage the compressor.

Symptoms can point toward a refrigerant problem, but charge should never be diagnosed from one symptom or one pressure reading alone.

Weak Cooling and Long Run Times

A system that runs for long periods but cannot pull the home down to setpoint may have low refrigerant, but airflow, dirty coils, compressor performance, duct leakage, and excessive heat load can produce similar symptoms.

Ice on the Evaporator Coil

A low evaporator saturation temperature can contribute to freezing. Restricted airflow can also freeze a coil, so the coil should be completely thawed and airflow evaluated before refrigerant charge is judged.

Hissing or Oil Residue

Some refrigerant leaks can produce hissing sounds or oil staining near tubing, coils, service valves, or fittings. Many leaks are not visible, so electronic leak detection, bubble solution, isolation, or pressure testing may be needed.

Repeated Need for Refrigerant

A residential split system is a closed refrigerant circuit. If it repeatedly needs refrigerant, there is usually an underlying problem. Continuously adding refrigerant without addressing the cause can become expensive and may allow the system to operate under damaging conditions.

How Charge Should Be Verified

Proper charging depends on the equipment and metering device. Measurements may include superheat, subcooling, line temperatures, saturation temperatures, indoor wet-bulb and dry-bulb conditions, outdoor temperature, and airflow. Manufacturer charging data should guide the final assessment.
