Why Is My AC Running but Not Cooling in Allen, TX?

Your air conditioner is running, you can hear air moving, but the house is still warm. That usually means the system is operating without removing enough heat from the home.

Some causes are simple, while others require electrical, airflow, or refrigerant testing. The goal is to identify the actual failure before replacing parts.

Start With the Thermostat and Airflow

Confirm the thermostat is set to COOL and the temperature setting is below the room temperature. Then inspect the return filter. A heavily loaded filter, blocked return grille, closed supply registers, or a dirty evaporator coil can reduce airflow enough to hurt cooling performance.

Is the Outdoor Condenser Running?

If the indoor blower is running but the outdoor condenser is not, the system cannot reject heat outdoors. Possible causes include a tripped breaker, disconnect problem, failed contactor, capacitor, control circuit problem, condenser fan motor, or compressor issue. Repeatedly resetting a breaker that continues to trip is not a repair.

Frozen Evaporator Coil

Ice on the indoor coil or suction line can dramatically reduce airflow and cooling. Common causes include restricted airflow and refrigerant problems. Turn cooling off and allow the system to thaw before meaningful diagnosis. Continuing to run a frozen system can create water damage when the ice melts.

Low Refrigerant or a Refrigerant Leak

Air conditioners do not normally use up refrigerant. If charge is low, there may be a leak or an earlier charging problem. Proper diagnosis should consider manufacturer charging data along with superheat, subcooling, saturation temperatures, line temperatures, indoor conditions, outdoor conditions, and airflow.

Dirty Condenser Coil

A condenser packed with dirt, grass clippings, cottonwood, or debris cannot reject heat effectively. This can raise operating pressures, increase compressor load, and reduce cooling capacity. The coil should be cleaned without damaging the fins or electrical components.

When to Schedule Service

If the filter is clean, the thermostat is correct, and the system still cannot cool the home, professional diagnosis is appropriate. A technician should check electrical operation, compressor and fan performance, temperature split, airflow, and refrigerant conditions before recommending a repair.
